Absent Work
Our class is a very discussion/project based classroom. Many of the activities we do:
So, what to do if your child is absent? I will do my best to "catch your child up" on things they missed. If I collected assignments to be graded, I will send them home with your child. Returning those as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated.
The suggestions below are for activities you can do with your child in lieu of work that would have been done in class. Unless your child has an extended absence, they can get any missing assignments upon their return to class.
Students have access at home to Exact Path's Edmentum which has individualized learning paths for math and reading. Here's the link: https://login.edmentum.com/ the account log in is appsd1 and the username and password are your child's 200... number.
- building models
- listening to a book
- working with a partner on comprehension activities
- going outside to look at the garden or shadows or geometric shapes
- and more

Reading
We read each day in class. The Kids in Room 107 have "book club" books they are assigned, as well as occasional book reports. Have your child read approximately 30 minutes to "make up" the reading missed in school. In addition, students read aloud daily. Have your child read aloud to you for at least 15 minutes.
Word Study
Most days students will work on their assigned "word study" words (or spelling). This program is designed to allow for a variety of ways to learn - be it movement (physically sorting the words), listening (reading your sort out loud), writing (writing out the sort on a piece of paper). With each new set of words, your child is given a copy of the words to practice at home. Have your child practice their words in one of the above ways for 15 minutes to "make up" the time practicing their "word study" in class.
Writing
We write every day in our "daily writing journal". Have your child write for 15 minutes about their sick day and/or a topic of your choice to "make up" the time spent writing in class. Ask them to "conference" with you by having them read their writing aloud to you. See if they can find and fix any errors they make.
Math
Math in our class will be following a guided math instruction model. Students will be working in groups, as well as independently. I encourage you to have your child play one of the online math games for at least a half hour to "make up" the math missed in school.
